Dominica’s Independence Celebration 2011

astaphanscreoledisplayHopefully you have noticed that the Dominicans are dressing in lots of plaids on Fridays in October. This is a cultural custom, an expression of their freedom. Though Independence Day is not officially until November 3rd, Dominica started celebrating its independence back in mid September. The theme for this year is “Celebrating 33, Joining Hands In Unity”. During the month of October there are lots of festivities going on island wide. To view upcoming events click here.

I highly recommend attending Creole in the Park at the Botanical Gardens scheduled for Oct. 24-Oct. 27th. It reminds me of a small-scale version of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival -music, tents, food, entertainment, souvenirs etc.  Dominica also hosts the World Creole Music Festival October 28-30th down in Roseau. There is a national parade on November 3rd and a national holiday/community service day on November 4th. Lots to see and do if you want to learn more about Dominica’s culture. Hope to see some of you Rossies out and about.
